• Words of Wisdom

“You’ve been underestimated and that stops now. I expect you to be everything you can be today.”

— Robin Thede, Host of BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede, saying what she tells the women and men on her team. She is one of more than 100 innovative executives and entrepreneurs offering insights in Fast Company magazine on leading with optimism.

The insights were collected at the Fast Company Innovation Festival which gathered more than 8,000 “entrepreneurs, thinkers, creators, and practitioners” (32% men and 68% women) to “hold business to a higher standard.” Here are some of the words of wisdom:

“Share responsibilities” – Mary Zalla, Global President , consumer brands, Landor. “When you delegate, you are giving somebody else the opportunity to step up and challenge themselves, and develop their own leadership and creative capacities.”

“Unleash talent” – Lisa Skeete Tatum, Cofounder and CEO, Landit. “When people don’t have to compromise who they are in order to survive, then all energies are focused on the possibilities.”

“Make ‘em laugh” – Caryl Stern, President and CEO, UNICEF USA. “Good leaders know that humor and tenacity will get them further than anger and chaos.”

Jeff Glueck, CEO of Foursquare, has optimistic words for retail businesses. His main message is “Foster experience,” and he continues, “I think the demise of physical retail is way overstated. What most people forget is that 92% of consumer activity is still in the real world.”

The magazine also features a discussion between Walmart e-commerce CEO Marc Lore and Fabletics cofounder Kate Hudson on the data-driven future in an article titled “Rethinking Retail.”
