— Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and the founder of Leanin.org, and Adam Grant, professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Give and Take in an essay in The New York Times. The essay, entitled “When Women Speak,” describes a “speaking-up double bind” that occurs in many organizations and results in women being “quiet” in meetings.
One team addressed the problem by instituting a no-interruption rule while anyone — male or female — was pitching ideas. According to the leader of that team, it worked, and he later observed that it made the entire team more effective.
