Two Women Attending MIT on AWE Fellowship say “Thank You”

October 04, 20191 minute read

The 2019-2020 Academic year has begun at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and two women are pursuing a master’s degree in supply chain management with support from the AWESOME/MIT Advancing Women through Education (AWE) Fellowship. They visited with AWESOME Advisor Maria Nieradka recently to talk about their experience so far.

Elizabeth Raman Grubbs (right) received full tuition as the first person to be awarded the fellowship, introduced through an AWESOME/MIT partnership in 2018. Gabriela Lamas Oporto was also considered an excellent candidate and received partial tuition.

The fellowship is being offered again this year and applications are being accepted now through January 1, 2020 for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Elizabeth, who was a Senior Data Analyst at The Home Depot when she applied, and Gabriela, a Senior Process Engineer for Johnson & Johnson, were encouraged to apply for the scholarship by AWESOME leaders in their organization. AWESOME is asking senior women leaders to “reach back” and alert a qualified woman in their organization about the scholarship and the opportunity to propel her career forward.

As an AWESOME Advisor, Maria Nieradka is coordinating the fellowship selection process with MIT. MIT will review submitted applications and select three finalists. An AWESOME committee will review applications from the three finalists and select the full-tuition awardee based on her potential to advance as a leader in supply chain roles. The winner will be announced at the end of January.
