Jeffrey Tobias Halter, who spoke at the 2018 AWESOME Symposium and moderated the panel on “The Business Imperative of Advancing Women and Engaging Men,” believes that fathers of daughters can – and should – play an important role in advocating for women leaders in their own organizations. He writes on LinkedIn, “Fathers of daughters need to be outraged at the state of gender equality in this country.”
Halter is the President of YWomen, a strategic consulting company that helps organizations create Integrated Women’s Leadership Strategies, drive actionable business plans and strategies to attract, retain and advance women and address gender bias in the workplace. He is also the author of Why Women – The Leadership Imperative to Advancing Women and Engaging Men.
In 2015, Halter created the “Father of Daughter Initiative” as a guide to help men make the connection between women at work and their daughters and to take action to bring about change for the women in their lives. In the LinkedIn post, he recommends fathers of daughters take certain steps, including
- Encouraging qualified women to apply for positions when they become available
- Mentoring or sponsoring a female co-worker
- Having a candid conversation with a female co-worker about her experiences working in your company and industry
- Becoming aware of and correcting micro-biases in the workplace
Halter also suggests that observing interactions in the workplace will surface certain situations women often face, including being interrupted in meetings.
