Kate McHugh, the first American woman to captain a cruise ship, relating the story of how, when she was very young and on a cruise with her parents, she told her father she wanted to be the person who “plans the fun things on the boat.” He responded, “…but you can also drive the ship if you want.”

McHugh’s 91,000-ton Celebrity cruise ship will sail between the eastern U.S. and Bermuda with 2,158 passengers and 952 crew on board.
